First recordings of mining at the Honister Slate Mine dates back to the 1700’s, but it is believed it may have started in the Roman or even Pre-Historic era. Many skills were used by the miners which are carried on today with some processes not becoming mechanised until the 1920’s when a factory at The Hause was constructed. Many attractions can be found at the Slate Mine allowing you to learn a lot about the history of mining and what still goes on today.
The most exciting thing you can do at this attraction is the Underground Mine Visitor Tours. There are a few tours to choose from, ‘Kimberley’ fully underground suitable for all ages, ‘The Edge’ venture up the mountain before heading deep inside the mine or ‘The Cathedral’ a tour of the working mine with mining stories being told by the owner. Each tour lasts about 1 ½ hours and will provide you with a great experience of exploring the mines whilst learning about the industry.
For those who are looking for some adventurous activity during your stay, you can have a go on ‘Via Ferrata’, which is a twist on traditional rock climbing. Instead of being belayed during your climb, you are attached to a permanent fixture by iron rungs and supports. The attractions do not finish there as there is a visitor centre, factory trail, stone garden and cafe; enough to keep you busy all day.
