Hawes

The thriving market town of Hawes located in the heart of WensleYdale is a typical Yorkshire Dales town full of character and charm. The name, Hawes, means a 'pass between mountains', and it stands between Buttertubs and Fleet Moss.

It is home to the famous Wensleydale Cheese visitors centre where you can watch the production and sample theses tasty treats! You can learn about the history of the dales at the Dales Countryside Museum or visit one of several craft workshops, antique and other speciality shops. Market day is on a Tuesday so make sure you visit to take in the carnival atmosphere, when the whole community converges to visit the local auction mart and stock up with provisions at the indoor and outdoor stalls.

The town is an excellent centre for walking and touring Wensleydale and the adjoining dales of Swaledale, Cotterdale, Dentdale, Garsdale, Wharfedale and Chapel-le-Dale. Take a walk round the Hawes Town Trail, or Millennium Walk, or Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby – whatever takes your fancy!

Drive over the Buttertubs pass to see the intriguing formations of fluted limestone potholes or visit the Hardraw Force, a spectacular waterfall in a wooded ravine just outside the tiny hamlet of Hardraw at the foot of the Buttertubs Pass .
