Description

Sandbed cottage sits in a superb, rural location at the foot of Harter Fell, close to Ravenstonedale, a picturesque village with two pubs serving restaurant and bar meals, there is a playground for younger children and some Gilbertine ruins in the grounds of St Oswald’s church. The area also offers several golf courses, fishing on the river Eden or Lune and horse riding. The ancient market town of Sedbergh is approximately 6 miles away, where you can browse the craft and book shops or enjoy a coffee surrounded by the breathtaking scenery or the “sleeping elephants” as the Howgills are fondly known, perfect for gentle walks or more adventurous hikes.

Sandbed cottage has been thoughtfully designed to retain many original features of oak beams, flagged floors and the occasional exposed stone, creating interest and character. Handpicked pieces of furniture have been lovingly sourced and restored by the owners to create a mix of old and modern, the result being a most charming cottage, ideal for a family or two couples. Walks are in abundance from the door and your dogs are very welcome, the owners also offer two stables for rent by prior arrangement, so that you can enjoy the open fells and bridleways of this quiet and peaceful part of the Eden Valley.

About the local area

The lime stone pavement of Fellend clouds can be found only a short walk away from Sandbed cottage as can the ancient Murthwaite woods, where you may see deer, red squirrels and hear the call of buzzards. The fells surrounding the cottage are grazed by wild fell ponies and  Swaledale sheep, the fells are open access for all users.

Seven miles north of Sandbed cottage at the head of the Eden Valley lies the market town of Kirkby Stephen, this is on Alfred Wainwrights famous coast to coast walk and the Cumbria cycle way a great route for all keen cyclists. The Settle-Carlisle Steam rail line passes nearby by and can be boarded at Kirkby Stephen station; Cumbrian vintage buses also do tours of this spectacular area.  A little further afield are the magnificent mountains and fells of the Lake District and in the other direction the Yorkshire dales with stunning scenery offering charming villages to look around, rivers to amble by or more challenging walks.

What our customers say

D Dyer - July 2012

Karen and Steve are very welcoming and helpful and even let us borrow a mobile phone with network coverage at the cottage when ours didn't get a signal. The fresh eggs from the hens were delicious and we loved feeding them. Very clean and comfortable cottage. We will go back again.

The property was very comfortable and the owners friendly and helpful.

F Tessaroli - June 2011

The cottage was clean and comfortable, the proprietors live next door but they are very discreet and helpful if you need anything. Very good experience.
