Whitby

Whitby combines all the delights of a quaint fishing village with some fascinating history as well as proximity to the beautiful interior of North Yorkshire. Along with stunning beaches, top class restaurants and nightlife, it is easy to understand why Whitby is such a popular tourist destination.

The eleventh century Whitby Abbey dominates the cliff above the town. This ruin is a testament to the long history that Whitby has enjoyed. From the town to the abbey (which was made very famous thanks to its inclusion in Bram Stoker's Dracula novel) there are 199 steps and though it is accessible by road, most people prefer to climb the steps.

Whitby was also Britain's foremost whaling town and the legacy of this industry is still visible, whaling exhibits can be found in Whitby Museum along with many other aspects of Whitby life. The Museum can be found in Pannett Park, a restful park complete with an ornamental pond.

Captain Cook, who lived in Whitby for 7 years, is also prominent in the town and his life is examined at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. Whitby was also one of the foremost producers of Jet Jewellery and a visit to the Jet Heritage Centre, complete with authentic Jet workshop gives a fascinating glimpse of this once important trade.
