| Running from north to south, Wharfedale is one of the Yorkshire Dales' longest and most beautiful valleys. Rising on the high moors of Langstrothdale Chase, the infant River Wharfe passes down the remote valley of Langstrothdale and through the hamlets of Yockenthwaite and Hubberholme to the village of Buckden at the head of what from then on is then known as "Wharfedale". From here the River Wharfe travels on southwards, through the villages of Starbotton, Kettlewell, Conistone and Kilnsey (famous for Kilnsey Crag, a dramatically overhanging limestone cliff - popular with climbers and tourist alike) - just north of which it is met by the tributary valley of Littondale and the River Skirfare. Further downstream the River Wharfe passes between the villages of Grassington and Threshfield, then on through Burnsall, The Strid and Bolton Abbey, from where the river passes out of the National Park and on through Ilkley and Otley to meet the River Aire in the Vale of York.
Bolton Abbey is one of the Yorkshire Dales most famous attractions on the banks of the River Wharfe. With just under 30,000 acres of beautiful countryside, over 80 miles of footpaths and ample space to run around and enjoy the fresh air, there is something for all ages. Explore the ruins of the Priory and discover a landscape full of history and legend, wander along the riverside, woodland and moorland paths, enjoy local produce in the excellent restaurants, tea rooms and cafes, treat yourself in the quality gift shops and food shops or simply relax beside the river with a picnic whilst the children play.
Just down the river from Bolton Abbey is the beautiful Spa town of Ilkley. Although within easy reach of the cities of Leeds and Bradford Ilkley is surrounded by unspoiled countryside, with Ilkley Moor and the famous Cow and Calf rocks positioned just above the town.
Also on the moor is the famous whitewashed building known as White Wells - which houses a bath at a site which dates from Roman times. Other attractions include the Victorian bath house in the town itself, and the recently refurbished Ilkley Pool and Lido, one of the country's last remaining outdoor public swimming pools. Ilkley also offers a great selection of shops and restaurants as well as the famous Betty’s Tea Rooms! |
