Bishop Burton, a little village on the border of the Yorkshire Wolds, has white painted cottages around its shaded greens and ponds. This picturesque village was named in the Doomsday book and gets its name from the Middle Age manor that was the residence of the Archbishops of York. Nowadays this is a farming community and home to an important college of agriculture.
In the village there are 2 ponds; one is called the Mere and the ducks and geese that live on it are partial to a bit of bread now and then. The village pub is the Altisidora Inn (named after a racehorse) and there is a village shop with post office which offers a good range of food items and other goods. The owners and staff are always happy to help with information about the village.
There are half a dozen golf courses to choose from in the local area. For the horse lover, twice a year there are British Eventing days held at Bishop Burton College, around May Bank holiday and October time. These include dressage, jumping and cross country.
Most of the village is a conservation area because it has maintained the character of an estate village.
