Wetherby is a delightful historic market town in West Yorkshire. Although it is officially part of the city of Leeds, which makes it a breeze to pop into the city centre for the day, it is a charming town which has its own distinctive character.
Located on the banks of the River Wharfe, the town has long been a historical staging post and crossing place on the Great North Road which ran from London to Scotland, serving many areas in between. Many of the inns that were established at that time remain open today, providing travellers to this area of outstanding natural beauty with an extremely warm welcome.
There is plenty of well preserved architecture here, as well as some wonderful restaurants and great shopping facilities too. Perhaps the most famous part of Wetherby is the Racecourse, which attracts huge numbers of visitors to the area to experience the thrill of a day at the races. Horse racing has been taking place in Wetherby since Roman times and today it features one of the country's foremost jumping tracks while still retaining its traditional heritage. It takes less than half an hour to get from Wetherby to Leeds, York and Harrogate and it is a lovely place to base yourself for a relaxing Yorkshire break.
