Gargrave

The charming village of Gargrave is ideally situated for your visit to Yorkshire. The River Aire runs through the village, affording picturesque moorings in a village full of history and natural beauty. When you're ready to eat, there are many fine restaurants with a Yorkshire welcome.

The Aire River is partly made up of canals known as the Aire and Calder Navigation. This major river is 71 miles long and the tranquil flow of the canal brings visitors to the village.

Skipton Castle, only four miles away, is where you will discover more about Cromwell, who ordered the castle roof to be removed, but it was later replaced.

The sheep dog trials during the summer are a great attraction, when the master works the dog to get the sheep in the pen. The dog is a real asset to sheep farmers in these parts.

Just south of Gargrave, there are the ruins of a Roman villa called Kirk Skink, but much of the stone was taken and used in Gargrave church, which sits opposite a pub where you can take refreshments.

The village is close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, which offers stunning scenery and wildlife. With the Pennine Way, known as "the backbone of England", running right through the village, it makes an ideal place for hikers to holiday.
