Skipton is a picturesque village in the West Riding of Yorkshire, steeped in history. Skipton Castle was constructed in 1090 by a Norman baron, Robert de Romille, who was held in high esteem.
Later, the formation of a market town surrounding the castle gave way to the medieval name, "Sheep Town". The current name of Skipton derives from that medieval name. Skip means sheep and ton means town.
Thanet Canal in Skipton is part of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal. It was named after Lord Thanet who once owned Skipton Castle. History ripples through this tranquil and scenic landscape, known for its warm hospitality.
Take a boat trip from the Canal Basin, where you may see some wildlife. The canal sees many tourists return. There is a market in Skipton several times a week where you can buy food and clothing, or you can just soak up the Yorkshire atmosphere.
Craven Museum in Skipton Town Hall has a splendid display of heritage and social history. The surrounding Yorkshire Dales National Park has lots of activities you can enjoy from a leisurely walk to canoeing or climbing. There is great opportunity for the photographer, with such stunning scenery. It encompasses 680 square miles of incredible beauty, so capture some of the freedom of nature that the area offers!
