The Old Sweet Shop is a deceptively spacious 18th century character cottage quietly located on one of Richmond's most picturesque cobbled streets at the entry to the Yorkshire Dales. Cosy and welcoming, the cottage offers an abundance of period features including exposed beams, stained glass to the entrance and a bay window in the lounge where you may sit and watch the world go by. The cottage is centrally heated and the living flame fire in the lounge is warm and inviting. Situated on the Georgian street of Frenchgate, now a cul-de-sac, the cottage was once a sweet shop but has been lovingly restored and refurbished to a particularly high standard. A reconstruction of it when it was a Victorian grocer's shop (and the birthplace of John Fenwick founder of the department stores that carry his name) can also be seen in the Richmond Museum. A side entrance from the rear hall offers a "short cut" into the town centre, which is particularly handy for the shops.

Richmond was voted "Best Small Town" in 2009 and boasts a medieval castle, many beautiful Georgian buildings, a unique Georgian theatre, a Victorian railway station converted into a leisure centre, a variety of good restaurants and beautiful river and woodland walks. It is also perfectly positioned for exploring both Swaledale and Wensleydale or visiting local market towns such as Leyburn, Hawes and Reeth. Also handy for the delightful town of Barnard Castle and the Bowes Museum which replicates a typical French Chateau and holds a wealth of art, along with the market town of Thirsk and the historic cities of Ripon and York, each with a racecourse and perfect for those who enjoy a flutter.
