Bainbridge is a small town with an ancient history. Its foundation is owed to the establishment of a fort here during Roman times. The town owes its name to the River Bain (from "beinn" meaning straight in the Viking language), reputedly the shortest river in England. This quiet little village has an active community that centres on the village green. You can witness a classic car rally here once a year or, if you have fallen ill of the local Lords Trustees of the Manor of Bainbridge, be thrown in the stocks. Opposite the green you will find the pub, The Rose and Crown, which has a locally favoured restaurant as well as a tried and tested selection of the local ales.

Yet Bainbridge is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and here you will find some of the most pleasurable and scenic walks in England. There are mountains to climb, waterfalls to visit and caves to plunder. There are barrows, the burial grounds of Iron Age kings, to visit including those at Stony Raise and Addleborough. However, you might just appreciate Bainbridge for what it is, that being, a quite country village where very little has changed in years and the pace of life is only as fast as the barman.
