From the cottage a short level stroll leads to the market square which is surrounded by an excellent selection of shops, pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes. There is also a small cinema, the Wensleydale railway line, tea pottery and chocolatiers - ensuring something for everyone. At the top of the town "The Shawl" offers superb views over the dale and it is believed this is where Mary Queen of Scots dropped her shawl whilst escaping from nearby Bolton Castle.
Leyburn is an excellent base from which to explore with Middleham, complete with Castle which was once home to Richard III, some 3 miles away. Middleham is also home to over 1,000 racehorses which can be seen daily en route to practise on the gallops above the town. For children, The Forbidden Corner with its labyrinth of tunnels and chambers to explore, should not be missed.
