About the local area

The racing stables at Middleham house nearly 500 horses, which you can see every day on their way to the training gallops on the High Moor above the town.  If you are lucky enough to be on holiday over Easter every Good Friday all the Middleham racing yards are open to visitors and a free bus service is provided for the outlying stables.

Excellent walking may be enjoyed in and around Middleham with several starting within yards of the front door.  Walks along the banks of the Rivers Ure and Cover and up onto the High and Low Moor give spectacular views over Wensleydale and will take you past some noted local pubs.  If you are feeling energetic you may venture further afield into Coverdale where the Forbidden Corner can be found.  Voted best family attraction in 2009 it is suitable for adults and children alike with a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, tricks and follies created within a 4 acre garden and described as “The Strangest Place in the World”.  Tickets must be booked in advance and can be reserved through the village shop or from Leyburn Tourist Information Centre.

The Wensleydale Railway runs regularly between April and October and on selected days out of season offering a less strenuous way of seeing the beauty of the Dales and visiting its wonderful towns and villages.

The bustling market town of Leyburn is only 2 miles from Middleham and linked to it by one of the first examples of a suspension bridge in England built in 1829.  Leyburn has a wonderful selection of shops, cafes pubs and craft workshops ensuring something of interest for all age groups. On Fridays there is an open-air market in the square, Farmers' markets are held throughout the year and, on the May Day Bank Holiday the acclaimed Dales Festival of Food and Drink is held. The Leyburn Business Park is also home to several unusual and world-class businesses including Tennants, the largest provincial Auction Centre in the country.
