Middleham is steeped in history and charmed by the daily presence of racehorses passing the door of Old Cartmel Cottage as they head to the gallops for their daily exercise and return to the famous racing stables just a few doors away.

About the local area
Middleham is surrounded by the rolling Yorkshire Dales countryside, making it the perfect location for walking, or for those who require a more leisurely form of transport, the 'Dales Bus' runs on a regular basis, stopping at many of the popular Dales locations, or perhaps a trip on the Wensleydale railway with its nostalgic steam train may be your style. Elsewhere in the area there are many attractions. The traditional market town of Leyburn is just a couple of miles away, and the famous cathedral cities of York and Ripon are both within easy reach, both are well worth a visit and the racing enthusiasts amongst you may like to drop in on a race meeting whilst visiting. There are many other attractions in the area, and for those of you who enjoy life's little mysteries, there is nowhere more mysterious than the 'Forbidden Corner', this certainly is an open garden with a difference, and is sure to leave you bemused and mystified!!
