Sitting at the mouth of the River Esk, the seaside town of Whitby is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the North Yorkshire coast. As famous for its gothic associations as it is for its sandy beaches, fish and chips or local gemstone, Jet, the charming fishing town has an enticingly eerie, dark side.

Isolated from the town’s maze of cobbled streets, quaint tea shops and attractive shops, Whitby Abbey perches at the top of the East Cliff. The beautifully melancholy ruins make a haunting impression on those who navigate the famed 199 steps to get there! A favourite summer spot for Irish author, Bram Stoker, Whitby both inspired and featured in his horror classic, Dracula. Literary fans are drawn from near and far to visit the shore at which Stoker’s Transylvanian vampire’s ship supposedly washed up, and the famous bi-annual Goth Weekend (in April and October) is testament to the mark that the novel has left on the town.

If you’re happier with sand between your toes and a sea breeze in your hair, then you’re in for a treat with Whitby’s Blue Flag beach. A haven for surfing, strolling and even fossil hunting, it’s an ideal spot for a walk along the seashore, gazing upon the brightly coloured huts that line the way. And while you’re exploring the local landscape, make sure you don’t miss the iconic Whalebone Arch, a relic of the town’s whaling heritage.

No trip to the coast is complete without a decent portion of fish and chips and Whitby doesn’t disappoint. The town remains a working fish port so you can expect top quality produce! Some of the most celebrated fish and chips in the country is served at the award winning The Magpie Café, but if you don’t fancy the inevitable queues there is an array of alternatives which serve fresh, locally caught fish.
