Upper Teeside, in the County of Durham, is well known as an area of outstanding natural beauty and for good reason. Situated on the Pennine Way, this area of County Durham is stunningly beautiful and there is much to see and do when visiting the historic market towns and farming villages in the region.

Barnard Castle is a bustling market town with much to offer. The views and scenery are lovely and it is home to some of the most historic and important buildings that England has to offer. The original castle was built in the 12th Century by the Normans and was later passed to the Balliol family before eventually being inherited by King Richard III via his wife Anne. However, after King Richard's death, it was left to rot and ruin and the remains are now surrounded by the busy thriving town of the same name.

Barnard Castle is also home to the famous French chateau style building that is the Bowes Museum. An historical building in its own right, it is now home to international artefacts, furniture and porcelain. This building was purpose built by John and Josephine Bowes in the 19th Century. The aim was to enable local people to experience and enjoy all different types of art.
