About the local area

A few minutes’ walk will bring you either into the hustle and bustle of the town centre or the other direction towards the three miles of golden sandy beach. Rod and Reel Cottage provides the perfect base for a seaside holiday or for exploring the Yorkshire Coast and National Park areas nearby. Whitby is a very popular sea-side destination with plenty to entertain the family all year round. There are many music festivals, a regatta, folk dancing and many more activities. On the cliff top which is located five minutes away there is plenty of activities including swimming, tennis, crazy golf, go-Karting and trampolining. If you travel slightly further you can enjoy the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors and a trip on the North York Moor steam train is the best way to do this. It will take you from Whitby to the lovely market town of Pickering stopping off at Goathland otherwise known as ‘Heartbeat Country’. The lovely coastal resorts of Sandsend, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay are all within close proximity and are well worth a visit.

One of the country's most popular steam railways, covering 18 miles between the market town of Pickering and the village of Grosmont, travelling through the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

Captain Cook Memorial Museum

Situated in the house by the harbour side where James Cook came to serve his apprenticeship in 1746. With period rooms as Cook knew them, original paintings, manuscripts, models and artefacts from his voyages.
