One of the country’s preeminent tennis players, Roger Taylor was born and raised locally, in Sheffield. During a glittering career, spanning from 1967-1980, he won six singles and 11 doubles titles and was rated as the eighth best player in the world before the introduction of the ATP rankings. The famous left-hander recorded what may have been his most celebrated victory in 1970, beating Rod Laver in the quarter finals of Wimbledon before losing in the semis. After retiring as a player, Taylor went on to captain the Great Britain Davis Cup team between 2000 and 2004.
There are free-to-play public courts scattered around the county, and for those who would like to experience a day at a tennis club, the centres at Thongsbridge and Ilkley, which has 14 grass courts, are particularly popular.
