About the local area

The Smithy enjoys an enviable position just outside the thriving village of Finghall with its reputable pub, post office and even railway station allowing access to the Wensleydale railway, the ideal way to sit back and enjoy the stunning Wensleydale countryside at a leisurely pace. The popular market towns of Leyburn and Bedale are just five miles away, both offering a good selection of tearooms, gift shops, restaurants, delicatessen and a popular weekly street market where a wide range of products can be purchased. Bedale boasts its own community bakery where local volunteers bake the finest bread using local produce. For those who enjoy an active lifestyle, Bedale, Masham and Richmond all offer highly regarded golf courses which i am told will test the integrity of any talented golfer! Bedale leisure centre offers a newly refurbished swimming pool. Ideal to keep the children entertained if the weather is not being too kind. Leyburn is wonderfully situated with the hills of Wensleydale to the West with mile upon mile of perfectly formed stone walls and footpaths meandering their way up hill and down dale. For those of you who enjoy a little history, the well preserved castles at Castle Bolton and Middleham are well worth a visit, and there are many natural attractions within the area including the stunning waterfalls of Aysgarth and Burton Force. To the east of Leyburn lies the more rugged Swaledale countryside, famous for its James Herriot connections of which The Smithy is one, as it was used as a location for the filming of All Creatures Great and Small. Swaledale again provides mile upon mile of unspoilt Yorkshire Countryside, a haven for walkers and cyclists alike. The picturesque town of Richmond sits within the Swaledale countryside and is steeped in history. The well preserved castle overlooks the town and the cobbled market place is surrounded by a good selection of amenities housed within wonderful architecture which adorns the town. However you choose to spend your holiday, you are sure to be swept away by the quality and presentation on offer at The Smithy together with a friendly Yorkshire welcome.
